That night, Bruno brooded about what Oma had said as he lay in bed listening to her snore in her room. He was to hear a lot worse about Hitler in the months to come.

Chapter 5

Blood on Our Hands

Days passed into weeks, and weeks passed into months, and Bruno didn’t leave Oma’s cottage. He often thought about it and told himself he should continue his journey to the west so he could be with his grandparents. But Bruno had everything he needed for the time being, Frida was happy, and the world outside the forest was a scary place. He knew that for a fact, from listening to the radio each evening.

“The news was bad all the time, so I stopped bothering with it,” Oma said when she got the radio out of a cupboard a few days after Bruno arrived. It was a small shiny black box with a square speaker panel and a tuning dial that glowed. “But we should try to stay informed.”
